- Some Senecio species containing isatidine have been used as medicinal herbs (e.g., S. bupleuroids DC. in African herbal remedies). Isatidine is the N-oxide of retrorsine, expected in plants yielding retrorsine (Senecio and Crotalaria). It is a toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloid N-oxide with DNA adducts as a biomarker for toxicity.
