Uranium dioxide is used for fuel in nuclear reactors. Uranium oxides are also used to colour glass and ceramics. Occurs naturally in uraninite and pitchblende. It is the most important nuclear fuel for nuclear power reactors, with high melting point, good high-temperature stability, strong radiation resistance, good corrosion resistance, and good compatibility with zirconium or stainless steel cladding, though it has poor thermal conductivity.

氢还原法

• 原料：U的高价氧化物（如UO₃、U₄O₉、U₃O₈等）
• 反应式：U₃O₈ + 2H₂ → 3UO₂ + 2H₂O
• 装置：气密性高的石英管式炉，含氢气入口、铜网（450℃）、液氮捕集器、水压力计、真空泵抽吸口、双层石英舟、试样、氢还原炉（1000℃）、硅胶、鼓泡器（水）、氢气出口
• 步骤：
  1. 将八氧化三铀充分粉碎，放入干净的石英皿（或石英舟）中，铺成薄层，置于石英管式炉中央；
  2. 系统抽真空后，导入惰性气体（氩、氦等）置换残余气体，反复操作；
  3. 通入氢气，在1000～1100℃下加热约24h（时间可根据试样量及铺开状态调整）；
  4. 还原完毕，切断电源，停止通氢气，在氢气氛中冷却至室温；
  5. 迅速取出试样置于密封容器中保存，避免氧化。
• 条件：温度1000～1200℃（通常1000～1100℃），氢气流，加热时间约24h，需确保系统气密性，氢气导入前需抽真空并置换残余气体，氢气出口用鼓泡器液封，磨口连接处涂润滑脂防止漏气。
