Analysis reagent; Used as plasticizer for vinyl resins. Phthalate esters are mainly used to soften polyvinyl chloride. It comprises 31.1% of a typical melt-mixed polyvinylchloride powder-coating formulation and was produced in large volumes (e.g., >1 million pounds in 1976, >1.36×10⁶ g in 1975, <2.27×10⁶ g in 1983).

Step 1: Alcoholysis of Phthalic Anhydride (PA) to Monoester

• Reaction: Rapid, exothermic alcoholysis of phthalic anhydride (PA) to form the monoester, proceeding to completion.
• Conditions: Generally starts at elevated temperatures.

Step 2: Diesterification of Monoester

• Reaction: Conversion of the monoester to the diester, with water formation (reversible reaction, slower than Step 1, determining overall rate).
• Conditions: Amphoteric catalysts (used by major phthalate producers), reaction temperature ~200 °C (minimizes side reactions, allows alcohol recycling without purification).
• Yield: Over 99.5% conversion to diester achieved with this catalyst system.
• Water Removal: Water of reaction removed by distillation to shift equilibrium toward the diester.
